rooflite® semi-intensive
Formulated for semi-intensive green roofs this media is ideal for a wide range of perennials, grasses and even small growing shrubs and evergreens depending on the construction depth and irrigation options.
For semi-intensive green roofs the media typically is 6-8 inches deep and the saturated weight is about 35–50 pounds per square foot. Whether irrigation is necessary or not depends on the regional climate and on the kind of plants that are being used.
rooflite® semi-intensive can be used in combination with rooflite® drain or any other adequate drainage system.
Note: Although the FLL-Guidelines distinguish between extensive, semi-intensive (simple intensive greening) and intensive green roofs they don’t give specific requirements for semi-intensive media. The reason is that they fall into the same range of requirements like extensive media. Therefore rooflite® semi-intensive could be called an enhanced version of rooflite® extensive.

FLL & ASTM
ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. However, in the field of green roofs growth media ASTM has only approved test methods for measuring values, and has set no standards for media performance. In the absence of a North American standard, all rooflite® certified green roof media products are tested by independent laboratory analysis using the German FLL Green roof Guidelines’ Standards test methods and measured against their specified values. These laboratory test methods and performance standards are widely held as the state of the art specifications for material selection within the industry worldwide with decades of testing, research, and development in the field. FLL is a German acronym for (Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau e.V.), which translates in English to Landscape Development and Landscaping Research Society. Quality Assurance
Production of rooflite® is a series of sophisticated, proprietary processes. Every production partner in the rooflite® Regional Network is licensed to manufacture rooflite® Certified Green Roof Media. Our technical team sources the highest quality and most cost-effective regionally available raw materials including Hydrocks® Calcined Clay. Laboratory analysis verifies these materials will stand up to the demanding applications they are engineered for throughout the life of your building. Our proprietary mixing calculations ensure that every batch produced at every location is a precisely balanced blend that meets required performance values. Additionally, every member of the rooflite® Regional Network participates in a centrally managed Quality Assurance Program (QAP). Our periodic QAP employs independent laboratory analysis to verify compliance with specifications and performance requirements. Volume & Compaction
All rooflite® products are sold by volume and measured in cubic yard units (or cubic meters where applicable). When estimating rooflite® quantities, the required finished depth or thickness is just as critical a measure as the area to cover. Unlike other roofing materials, green roof growth media will compact, and this compaction factor must be planned for when estimating your needs. With multiple production locations throughout North America producing multiple products, typical compaction rates can vary by location and by product, but often fall between 15 and 20% by volume. Packaging Options & Delivery
rooflite® products are available loose in bulk or packaged in crane strapped super sacks from every location. Limited locations provide small bag packaging and palletizing. Super sacks size can vary depending on production location and typical bulk density, with average sizes from 1.5 to 2.0 cubic yards per sack. Super sacks are most often delivered via flatbed tractor trailer, but alternate delivery vehicle can be considered – if it is compatible with unloading equipment. Super sack are set on pallet so they can be lifted by fork-lift or fork compatible loaders and set on the ground, or lifted direct by crane, boom, or hoist. It is recommended that all loading equipment be rated for a minimum safe operating load of 3000 pounds. Bulk deliveries are typically made with triaxle trucks, dump trailers, or walking floor trailers. Confirm space is available for loose material before ordering in bulk. Bulk conveyance methods can include conveyor belts, tele-belts and slinger trucks, pneumatic blower trucks, and bulk crane hoppers. It is very necessary to consider your site access and space availability for both delivery equipment and conveying equipment. Not every conveyance method works at every project, nor is every site conducive to every piece of delivery equipment – off site staging may be required is some cases. When considering a green roof project, conveyance method and deliveries should be considered early in planning, not when the trucks arrive. LEED® Information
The rooflite® regional network currently consists of 17 blending locations within the Americas. With strategically located rooflite® production facilities, almost every vegetated roof project within the continental United States and the Caribbean Islands is no further than 500 miles from a local manufacturing site. Production locations in Ontario, Canada and across Mexico are positioned to supply green roof media demands in these exploding markets as well. The creators of rooflite® are USGBC Corporate Members, and all members of the rooflite® Regional Network have supplied materials for projects seeking various levels of LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). While every specific project’s LEED Credit potential is unique, a green roof in general can contribute to up to 5 Sustainable Sites (SS), Water Efficiency (WE), and Energy and Atmosphere (EA) LEED credits. Depending on your project’s location and your media requirements, rooflite® can contribute to two recycled content Material and Resource (MR) credits as well as two credits for Regional Materials – regional extraction and regional manufacturing.
